Modern wardrobe design would be fairly simple, if they were to serve only our clothes, but our wardrobes do more than that. As creatures of habit, over time, we amass a slew of belongings we like to call our own—some sentimental, some functional, some through perennial hoarding…and most of these belongings contribute to our personal style. From clothes and accessories to heirlooms and pieces of investment, our belongings are also a part of our identity, and it is second nature to want to preserve and store them well.
Wardrobe meaning
The word wardrobe appeared in the English language in the early 14th century. It originated from Old French words warderobe, wardereube and garderobe, in which “warder” meant “to keep, to guard” and “robe” meant “garment”. Evolution of the wardrobe, in the nineteenth century, the wardrobe began to develop into its modern form, sometimes incorporating a hanging cupboard at each side, a press in the upper part of the central portion and drawers below. The modern wardrobe differs in one respect from the historical one in its partitioning: there are often smaller compartments on either side with shelves as well as a middle space made up of hanging pegs and drawers – the latter being a modern addition.
The penultimate step in the evolution of the wardrobe was taken when the central doors, which had previously enclosed merely the upper part, were carried to the floor, covering the drawers as well as the sliding shelves, and were often fitted with mirrors. In the UK, a more affluent option is custom-made wardrobes, which are designed and built around the size and shape of the room.
Wardrobe dimensions
Wardrobe dimensions depend on the builder or designer. Most wardrobe cabinets typically are 24 inches deep, but can be as narrow as 18 or even 12 inches in depth. Height also depends on application, but standard height is usually no more than 72 inches. Width varies anywhere from between 24 inches to more than 96 inches. There is no real standard for wardrobe cabinet measurements, other than they fit into the space needed. Once the dimensions are established, allowances for doors, drawers and hanging space is determined.
